Partnering with Parents and Caregivers
Parents and caregivers are vital allies.
Please review OTF’s Professional Learning Module on the Safe@School website, Parents and Caregivers; Partners in Prevention, as well as OTF’s Parent Engagement website, where there is an extensive array of information, strategies and tools to work together.
As with students, a commitment to building and sustaining positive and healthy relationships with parents, guardians and caregivers is key. When these types of relationships exist, if an intervention is needed after a violent incident, it may be easier for all parties to move forward together. If there is antagonism or push back, we can mitigate it by understanding that parents, guardians and caregivers may have had challenging or traumatic relationships with schooling themselves or may be feeling defensive and judged from previous interactions with schools.
